I'm getting the above on the cheap as an unwanted work prize from a friend of a friend, shrink-wrapped as new.

How do I tell if it's a 1 or a (retina-display) 2, given the box is shrink-wrapped? Any tell-tale box markings?

The low price means I'll take it regardless but a model 2 would be an extra bonus?

Why not just take the shrink-wrap off (as you're buying it anyway) and open it to find out? I can't iamgine someone receving an iPad would worry about that either way.

Is there a product code on the back of the box?
Are you not wanting to open the box because you want to sell it on eBay?

Just covering all the bases, no biggie. The current owner is taking the Ebay route if all else fails.

I guess I'm only 90% taking it if it's a 1.

On the back of the box will be a sticker or something saying what's included in the box.

It should quite clearly mention 'ipad mini with retina display'.
