Quality self assembly wardrobes

We have very tight staircases that do a U turn half way through 4each flight of stairs so we are unable to get whole wardrobes up the stairs. However, we want to have good quality sturdy long lasting wardrobes for our bedroom. Any ideas? We'd have liked solid oak if our staircases allowed!

Ikea PAX system - variety of heights, widths and depths available. Mine are eight years old now and don't look it. They do some with oak veneered doors, and oak looking frames.

I have Ikea Pax, too. I used additional wood and fixings to install them as permanent fitted warddrobes (fixing them firmly to the walls). This makes them more stable than they might otherwise be.

There is a wide range of good value internal fittings for them, too.

The cost of Pax wardrobes is driven mainly by the choice of doors.

I second IKEA for the cheap prices for their value, robust build quality, choice of finishes and relative ease of assembly - although I'd avoid the really tall (2.4m+?) ones unless you need the space as thy're so robust that they are a bit heavy to handle.

But an alternative which I found to paying a carpenter is http://www.jali.co.uk/ You can, in effect, design and specify your own custom-made flatpack, self-assembly units to your own specification so they fit exactly. The ones I built some years ago were as well-specified as IKEA, and built to similarly precise fit tolerances

Nice idea and a nice website. But... a fair bit more expensive than Ikea.

I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
