More verbal diarrhoea from FGW....

............on station platforms. In addition to the luggage; gap; yellow line; wet platforms; no running; smoking; and of course apologies for the late running announcements - we now have the buggy announcement.
Don't forget to put the brake on (fair enough !) and then fold it up before you get on the train. Has the genius who thought this one up ever tried his/her own advice ?
Fold the buggy:- carry that with one hand, carry the child(ren) with another, carry the shopping with another, press the "open door" button with another - make a rude sign to FGW with another ????

I presume they are getting pressurised by the powers that be over late departures and some of these have shown it's due to those with buggies boarding, so they are taking some action by making Pas?
If this is the case then I'm sure they'd listen to any suggestion that speeds up boarding.Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.

Funny you should say that - yesterday I watchred a lady with a buggy boarding a train (ignoring the stupid announcement !) - she tipped the buggy back onto its rear wheels, pushed it forward until the front wheels were inside the train, lifted the rear of the buggy and pushed the whole thing into the train - almost as quick as a pedestrian. Had she followed "orders" she would have taken ages AND blocked the door for every one else !
FGW's method actually slows things down !!!!0 -
Perhaps it isn't "their" method?
Perhaps not everyone is as efficient as the person you witnessed?
Perhaps you just have a beef with FGW and want to blame them for things that are probably 70% out of their control.... as are most delays to trains. A London Midland train was delayed because of an abusive passenger. Not LM's fault (although I am aware they have a shortage of staff nearly all the time).0 -
Perhaps it is in relation to this incident? So they are just making sure people are aware of the need to put the brake on.
*Granted that was more of a platform issue but the advice is still sound. Remember at a lot of stations that FGW serve some trains go trhough some platforms very fast causing turbulence which could also move a buggy that has not had its break put on."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -

I do wish people would read a post before "spouting" off ! I said quite clearly that putting the brake on was "fair enough".
I fail to see how instructing to passengers to turn a simple evolution like wheeling a buggy onto a train into a difficult long winded one can speed up trains - and what an abusive passenger on LM has to do with the OP really goes WAY over my head.............0 -
If you notice a practice that speeds things up then of course send it into FGW, they will respond I am quite sure.
Remember the ToC have a duty of care to assess boarding from a safety POV first & foremost, regardless of the time it takes to accomplish the task.
The CCTV on stations now is very good indeed, so I would repeat that if they have added a PA to their automated announcements or are making one ad hoc by the staff there, then they are addressing a problem that HAS been highlighted there or elsewhere on their network.
I wonder if any instruction to go in backwards(?) was designed where they envisaged a member of staff or someone else to be as assisting each time?
Or maybe they considered the sort of prams/buggies that have 10kgs of shopping attached also waiting to fall down the gap?Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.

I'm sure [STRIKE]station and on board announcers[/STRIKE] the people who write the scripts for the station and on board announcers go to a special finishing school where they learn a very special kind of English.
Passengers are advised that .... is my current favourite

Yes, it's a special school called 'do what the bl**dy companies managers tell you to say and don't make it up yourself' nowadays.
In good old Intercity days we were given guidelines on what to include and told to make the PAs more human by NOT sticking to a script.Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.

Would the special kind of English be best described as corporate doublespeak? I once heard an announcement on board saying "customers will have to de-train at...."! How I laughed.0
