I wonder what the most cash-like investment permitted in an S&S ISA is? Perhaps some fund of short maturity corporate bonds?

In another thread, someone suggested pairing long and short FTSE ETFs ???

I'm pretty certain that most bank's systems would prevent you paying in more than the annual limit into an ISA.
this is correct, in my case I accidently overpaid to a santander isa about 4 years ago and they sent the money back to me to avoid it losing isa status

I doubt if this info helps the OP - but for the benefit of accurate information:
You can put cash in a stocks & shares ISA, pending investing in shares.
Be aware that interest rates on cash held in a S&S ISA are
    a) miniscule
    b) interest earned is taxable
    c) currently you can't transfer it to to a cash ISA.
