Cats and real Christmas trees....

Anyone have any experience of cats and real Christmas trees? :D

They love to knock the baubles off and play with them and they end up all over the house and trodden on. Plus I once had a cat that ate the silver wispy strands I'd draped on the tree and its poo came out all strung together...could have been a nasty trip to the vets there! I guess it takes some careful consideration!
Many thanks to everyone who posts competitions and works so hard to provide all the answers!

In over 30 years of marriage me and OH have always had cats and always have a real Christmas tree.

They do like to play with the tree ornaments but other than that we have never had any problems

  • I love Simon's cat!

Our cat never shows much interest in the Christmas tree apart from half heartedly batting a few baubles.

One year was different though, we had a lovely very thick and dense Nordmann tree and she was constantly at it, sniffing at it and trying unsuccessfully to climb up it. We couldn't understand why she was so interested.

All was revealed when we took it down. We always saw the branches off to get it in the green bin, and to our amazement we found a bird's nest about two thirds of the way up right near the trunk. It had been well and truly hidden except from the cat's nose!

Yes never get both at the same time! First cat Timmy would not appear to notice the tree - but when the family were safely in bed asleep would 'Strip' all the decorations he could find off it! I had to 'trim up the day' every bluddy day!
Second cat Nicki - constantly sniffed it! he was forever under the dam thing sniffing away!drove us nuts! in the end we got an artificial one and stuck with that ever since!
I wonder how Third Cat Barney is going to react!

My asbo cat used to climb the tree, so three years ago I got a spray bottle and when he went near the tree I sprayed him with water. He soon learnt and he doesn't go near it now, for fear he will get wet! I only had to do it a few times and he's never forgotten!
  • Hehe thanks for your anecdotes, they made me chuckle!

I think I'm going to give it a go and see how they react.... I think I'll put my expensive glass baubles towards the top of the tree and hope for the best!

arrgggh NO! don't put the expensive ones on yet! bung the cheapy ones on and see how cat reacts over a couple of days! then if happy cat will leave it alone and not 'redecorate' to his/her own ideas..........put your 'best baubles' on!

Yep, years ago, dog chased 1 year kitten, up tree, kitten got stuck, loud crashing noise from hall way, tree fell over, dog and kitten covered in needles, baubbles etc.................

Spend about 10 mins laughing, then sorting out the mess, kitten went back up tree a 2nd time, and it came over agian, so left off the decs, and left kitten to it............

  • Our two play with the baubles at the bottom of the tree but have never tried to climb it.... But there's always a first time.

My friends tree spends more time on the floor than it does stood up. Her cat is always climbing in it. This year she's fixing it to the wall with chain and some screws.
