This is tricky, can't open any account in the UK, Plz help

Hi guys,

First time on the website, and I think it's great, thank you!

Anyways, I've been in UK for nearly 9 years now, finished my degree and working now. I used to have a Barclays account, but I canceled it because I needed to leave UK for 6 months, since I come back I never (thought) open another account, so all my money is going to my partner's account. But now since I've been working, I found how fastrating it is not having a bank account, so here is the deal:
  • I don't hold an UK/EU/EEA passport, but I do have UK residence permit (Until next year I am getting a permanent one);
  • I only have my mobile phone bill and joint BT phone bill with my partner (only thing that I haven't cancelled)
  • I've been working since 2005, but I don't know why I still haven't received a thing from Inland Revenue (however I will have a interview about NI number with them tomorrow)
  • I have a foreign credit card (Visa, but it doesn't seem to be useful for opening bank accounts
I just don't know how I can open an bank account, any bank don't have all these crappy checks? Any input would be great, many thanks!!!

    You could try opening a Basic Bank or a HSBC Passport account.

    OH friends from South Africa have been here on a work permit for 4 years and have not got NI numbers. They have been told they will only get them once they have permenant residency. they have been on emergancy tax for 4 yrs but will get a refund once their residency is approved (or if they move back to S.A)

    Ye, the guy who interviewed me at DSS said that too, well, there isn't a induction pack or anything when I first come here, it's kinda difficult for someone who doesn't know/Don't care about these things to know it (by magic)

    Back to the account, I think I am stuck coz I don't have any overseas letter as I've been here for the last 9 years, LOL I think I might just wait for DSS issue me a NI number then probably give my a PXX as well, then use that to open a bank account, I've been waited nearly 9 years without a bank account, so only few month to wait now.

    Thanks for the info guys thou.
