Telematics Car Insurance

There was an article in Money Mail recently in which they said that this is now available to older drivers, but they did not say which companies offered it. Does anyone know please?

Now available how old was the article? I had one come up cheap on a quote about 3 years back.

Too restrictive and too open to abuse on who decides if your driving is upto the standard or not.

Do ALL the comparison sites, The cheapest with or without a box will be there.

Just because they have a black box fitted wont mean its cheaper though. And dont forget if you sell or swap cars during the policy there will be extra charges.

The article was on the Daily Mail money page yesterday. Up until now, it has only been available predominantly for younger drivers. It's not too restrictive for me as I was one of the guinea pigs for the Norwich Union "Pay as you Drive" scheme which was dropped, but it made good commercial sense for me as I am a "low user" driver. It was much cheaper for me, so please don't generalise. It's horses for courses.

Ecept it has not only been available for younger drivers. Several years back one of those came out slightly cheaper for me. But there were plenty of complaints.

It was much cheaper because it was a trial maybe?

My suggestion of doing the comparison sites will show you if the box schemes come out cheaper though.

The trouble with telematics is that you can't "enjoy" your driving.....you have to drive like a fairy.

Not when I was on "Pay as you Drive". I drove as I normally do. and I had no problems.
  • They are marketed at younger drivers but are open to all
  • Don't do it. Don't let this become common place. The algarithms in them are going to cause accidents.

An example. You are following a slower car, on the open road, and come across a shortish but adequate straight.

Normal overtaking would require the maximum acceleration to get uo to speed and overtake as quickly as possible. Ah. But the box has an accelerometer. So you'll accelerate less quickly. So you'll take twice as long as the overtake.

Ah I see you saying, I won't be overtaking, because I'm a safe driver.
I say, you'll be making a queue, and you be one of those 25 cars, scared to overtake, but not leaving a nice big gap between you and the car in front, so the car that does want to go more than 35 in a 60 will either have to overtake all 25 cars at once or he'll have to not bother.

But hey, you'll be okay, because as long as you drive at or below the limit you'll be safe.

Can you tell I hate them?
