Electricity meter stopped working
A couple of weeks ago I noticed that one of the readings on my electricity meter hadn't changed since I moved in last summer. I always provide the meter reading on the internet as I'm never around when they call but they always estimate and it was only when I went to check to see how far off they were that I noticed that it hadn't changed.
The Eon guy came around the other day and has changed the meter but it was the timer that was stuck at 5am. Basically, since I moved all the electricity has been coming off the night meter so I've got no idea whether or not I owe Eon or they owe me.
I live in a Victorian terraced house and work full time so there's not a big draw on the utilities during the day. When I moved in I was paying £40 per month but this went up to £100 in about March this year and then went down to £75 about 4 months ago. This all seems really high to me so I'd be surprised if I owe Eon, but I've got no idea where I stand.
Can anyone advise me before I give them a call this week to find out who owes what for the last 18 months? Thanks!!

Don't see how they "always estimate" if you provide your meter readings online. If a reading was rejected because it was the same as the previous one, wouldn't you have noticed?
Anyway, ask E.On what they want to do about it. If you are on Economy 7 and have been charged for all usage on the cheaper night rate, then you will owe them, but they can only estimate what percentage of the usage should have been at the higher daytime rate. Through summer, with no heating running, perhaps quite a significant percentage, but it's guesswork.
They might just write it off, you never know. Their customer service has a good reputation, but I don't know if it's that good!I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. Hi Victor,
I provide the reading every quarter which they seem to ignore and estimate every time - I only really noticed that a couple of weeks ago. I did get a letter about the same time saying that they thought there was a problem with my meter but I'd already booked for someone to come and have a look at it. I guess they noticed around the same time that I did that there was a problem. They were really helpful on the phone, I just wanted an idea of who owed who! I don't think I'm on economy 7 but it does worry me that I may have been underpaying when I already think the bill is high given I'm not in during the day at all.0 -
If the timer stuck at 0500 then you were charged 100% on the lower tariff until the timer was replaced. As such, you will owe them, BUT they will have no idea what your peak consumption would have been if you never had a standard peak/Off Peak billing previously.
If you are not on an OP Economy 7 tariff, then it makes no difference as you'll pay the single metered rate.
Rhe last time I heard of this, the supplier did not re-bill as the failure was not the customer's responsibility.0 -
I'm on the Age UK Fixed Price to April 2014. I'll give Eon a call this week and see what they say. Thanks for the help!0

Morning EmmyC,
Already some good info, so thanks guys.
It will really depend if you have been billed on an economy 7 tariff or not, we do have a team that deal with stopped meters and these are the guys your account will go to.
They can calculate your usage using actual reads from before the meter stopped (and after) they will take seasonal variances into account as well.
A revised bill can then be produced.
You're doing the right thing, in giving us a call.
