Getting Rid Of Pigeons

Hi, is there anyone who can save my sanity.

We own a ground floor flat in a Victorian converted property. There are 4 flats and we, stupidly, agreed to run the management company that was set-up. ( We used to live in the flat prior to renting it out and it seemed like a good idea at the time as the other owners were basically absent landlords.)

Over the last 12 months we had a growing problem with pigeons. They perched on the fire escape and cra**ed everywhere.

We had the area cleaned off and a local chap fitted those anti pigeon spikes. Seemed to work for a short time.

They then appeared again in greater numbers.

We then had a pest control "expert" who fitted some units with some stuff that was supposed to scare them off. No better. He then resorted to a dun and shot 15 pigeons and said "problem solved".

A month later- more pigeons. We then had quotes from people who said the only solution was to net-off the whole fire escape.

£980.00 later net appeared to work but a few weeks later- back again. They are now sitting "ON" the netting and cra**ing everywhere. There's no sign of them during the day but they return at night and are making a terrible mess again.

Apologies for the length of this post but we just don't know what to do. ANY IDEA'S WELCOME. Thanks

My parent in the south of France had a big pigeon problem what with the things cra**ing all over the awning/terrace/outdoor furniture etc and the seagulls being a complete nuisance too (mostly stealing croissants from the table :rotfl: )... my mum ended up buying little black boxes called "X-stop", it's Swiss :phttp://xstop.ch/produits1A.html and it really helped. Normally I'm fairly sceptical of those "magic repellents" things but this time I had to swallow my words - I ended up getting her to buy me one for my place in London. It does make a noise but it's not too bad and I can live with it, and obviously you put it outside. Since getting it, the pigeons that were usually on the railings of my terrace have stayed away. There doesn't appear to be UK distributors for the x-stop box but maybe there's something similar that can be found here. IIRC it was about 35 euros for one so doesn't break the bank either.

Problem is if it's a fire escape you can't effectively fit spikes as it would be seen as rendering the fire escape unusable and effect insurance.
Id try stringing strong nylon fishing line in a grid over the whole area, ensure it isn't tied to itself so doesn't act as a net, which is the issue you have now. If they fall through or can't get a grip they won't feel secure enough to roost.
That's the only sensible cost effective suggestion I have for you.

But you could put a cat in the net:rotfl::rotfl:

You need a hawk. Natural pigeon detergents are best. You can hire a man with a hawk who flies his bird around your building once a month for an hour. They leave a natural scent which stops pigeons coming near the building.

Many commercial properties use this and it works very well.

I beg to differ. The scent that a hawk leaves stays for quite a long time. I used to be a Facilities Manager in London and we had hawks flown once a month and it kept the pigeons away. It's an on going cost but is very effective.

That was my point, it doesn't last long and has to be repeated.
I used to shoot with a guy that kept them and got calls from the council to clear buildings. He used to laugh and remark it was the easiest money he ever made as he would be back again next week:D

Ok maybe a slight exaggeration on his part, but he meant the effect was short lived.
