What speakers to buy for a laptop?

Hi
Would like to buy some speakers for a laptop as a gift for Christmas. Haven't a clue were to start. Apparently I need a sub woofer!
I have a budget of around £100 but could push it to £120 for the right ones. Any advice/thoughts would be much appreciated.
