It would be helpful if you could describe the problem you're having, the specs and age of the computer that you wish to be fixed. Its just that in many cases, the cost of the repair will be far greater than the market value of the machine.

In some cases the repair could go into the low hundreds (£100-£200), in which case you might as well chuck it and buy a cheapo laptop for £400.

    Hi,

    This is basically the problem....

I have been set up on my wireless for sometime at home and over the weekend it suddenly stopped working. It just wouldnt allow me to get on line any more. My laptop picks up my hub signal but it doesnt connect me. My hub definitely works as my boyfriend uses the same hub.

I have tried resetting the whole thing again on my laptop but as soon as it asks me to key in the wireless key (i have made sure its keyed correctly) it says its not able to recognise it.

    I am using Windows XP.

    Any ideas????

make a note of the SSID the name the wireless router/access point uses you know when you search for a wireless network.

    open control panel
    network connections
right click the wireless connection and properties
    click the wireless networks tab
if your SSID is listed double click it, set the network authentication to open and the data encryption to WEP, remove the tick from the box next to the key is provided automatically enter your WEP key twice and click OK

See if it connects, if not then try it in shared network authentication mode

If the SSID isn't listed click add then set the network authentication to open and the data encryption to WEP, remove the tick from the box next to the key is provided automatically enter your WEP key twice and click OK if it fails change the authentication type to shared and try again.

if you have access to your BF's laptop and see what his settings are.

If you are set the same then try a repair, right click the network connection and click repair. and wait for a while.

If that doesn't work then check internet explorer properties
tools internet options, connections tab, click the LAN settings button and ensure that the use proxy server is not enabled, in fact there should be no ticks in the boxes on that page.

It isn't always a case of not being connected to the wireless router so you can also use the command prompt to check your connectivity
click start, then run, type CMD and hit enter (case not important I'm using upper case to indicate what you need to type)
type IPCONFIG/ALL it will then tell you your ip address, check what is says for the wireless adaptor hopefully something similar to this
    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : KLG-520 Wireless
    Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-00-00-00-00-00
    Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
    Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.2
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
    DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
    Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : 22 June 2007 00:11:34
    Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : 25 June 2007 00:11:34

The numbers may be different but they should all relate DHCP server the same as gateway and possibly the DNS server. if they are wildly different to each other you are not connected correctly.

Im falling asleeep as I type so I will go to bed and see how you get on tomorrow trying the above hopfully you may get somewhere.
