Options
Hi,
question for motoring experts .Wifey bought some winter tyres for her fiesta last year goodyear eagle ultra 195/50r15 82h and we went to change them back onto her new fiesta 1l ecoboost 2013 only to told they don't fit. The new ones are 195/55 hr 15 but when I search tyres for her car using reg plate it shows the old ones would fit am I being scammed?

The tyres would fit on the wheels, since old and new are the same width (195). The possible problem is that the outer diameter of the older tyres is 20 mm smaller than what is recommended. I used this calculator to check:

    http://www.etyres.co.uk/tyre-size-calculator

So that would reduce the ride height of the car by 10 mm, and cause the odometer and speedometer to over-read by 3.47% compared to what they do now.

Whether you could get away with this though I'm not qualified to comment I'm afraid. You might want to check what your insurance company would think of you having a non-standard wheel size fitted though.

They would fit. They are the same width - 195 and more important they are for 15inch wheels - R15. The 50 or 55 relates to the size of the sidewall but is a percentage of the width.

The real question is - what are the standard size tyres? From that you can work out if the speedo will be correct.

There's a difference in sidewall height - 50% of the 195mm tread width versus 55%. It's not a big difference, sure, but it is a difference.

But - given that you're talking about a virtually brand new car, and tyres that cost £70-odd each for quality brands - this does seem like a very strange bit of financial corner-cutting.
  • Are they just tyres or wheels and tyres? if just tyres they should fit fine unless she's had the new car dropped as low as it'll go.
If it's wheels and tyres, then is it possible it's the actual wheels that don't fit - possible difference in PCD ?

its fine, its only 5% difference off the side wall. IF and noticeable difference the car will feel a little quicker, the speedo will over read a bit.

many new cars have different size wheels in the option list they are not always 100% rolling radius as the other in the option list. also as your tyres wear from new(8mm) to the legal limit (1.6mm) the rolling radius changes.

if you are worried check the speed on your sat nav to make sure the speedo is not miles out
  • Thanks for all the replies. It was bit of a shock when we were expecting £50 for a tyre change over only to find we need new ones for £387 plus were stuck with ones that don't fit that have 3 months road ware

    Thanks everyone

Do definitely check with your insurance company.
