Can anyone help..please ?

My PC has been doing some strange things lately and has been running very slowly.
After reading some pointers, I installed Malwarebytes and ran it, only to find I had several unwanted items. After clearing it all and also running ccleaner, I thought it might be back to normal..but it isn't.
Anyway, I then tried to do a system restore, but everytime I try to do it..it fails. It also won't go back to any earlier than 11th November !
Any ideas, would be greatly appreciated.
This is my first post..so please be patient with me if I have posted this in the wrong place.
I am also not very computer savvy...so may need things spelling out :)

What error message do you get when you try to do a Sys Restore?
How exactly is it slow-on which functions?
Make and model, which OS are you running?
Data back up and Factory Restore may be a better option.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • It comes up with a message saying that the system restore was not successful....no matter what date I select, and there are only about six to choose from.
The PC was infected I think, as I ran malwarebutes and it found lots of things.
It keeps freezing and is painfully slow.
I have been using IE, Safari, Mozilla firefox and Google Chrome and it is the same with all of them.
I have a Packard Bell...but don't know what model number it is. How do I find this out ?

  • Are you running Windows XP? Can you right-click on the taskbar (bottom of screen) and choose "Task Manager" - click the processes tab - click the CPU% column (twice) to get process using most CPU at the top. What is it's name? Is it using 100% CPU almost all the time?

If this is the case it may be you need to turn of Microsoft Update (not windows update)

If not, all this info will possibly help anyway - you'll eliminate one possible cause. As for system restore, may not be necessary if this is the problem.

Have you got an anti-virus running?
    Friendly greeting!

    Hi
Many thanks for trying to help me
I am on Windows XP and have the free version of Avast running.
I have clicked on the CPU column and it is stating System Idle Process under the Image Name and then SYSTEM under the User Name and 99 under the CPU and 28k under the Mem Usage.
How do I turn off the Microsoft update please ?
  • Just found this in system properties...
    Computer (R)
    Pentium (R) 5CPU
    2.66GHz
    2.66GHz
    786MB of RAM

go into Control Panel > Automatic Updates, select to notify you but you choose when to install
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • no need to turn of Microsoft update if system idle is using the cpu (i.e. nothing is using the cpu).
one problem is no doubt that you have hardly any RAM, XP wants 2GB usually (you report 768MB)

can you run MBAM again? make sure its full scan, may find more. if it does, check all and remove/move to quarantine. restart. ccleaner.

also, as macman requested, make and model?

follow closed's thread (link above) first. report back!
    good luck

responding to people's info requests will get you more help :-)
