Induction range recommendations needed please!

Options
Hi all,

Looking for a 100cm oven for my new house and having seen an induction hob demo at a trade show I think I've decided that's the route I want to go down. Problem is, there aren't many reviews around which is making it tricky to choose :( Does anyone have an induction range that they love and would like to extol the virtues of to help me with the decision making process?!

Many thanks!
Sue.

We've got a Bosch induction hob and have been really pleased with it.

    Hi Soomagoo

Induction top ranges are becoming more popular but really ranges are still I feel all about a nice big powerful gas top.

As a Kitchen Designer the first question I would have to ask is why a range cooker? This is because by saying you want an induction top you dramatically limit your choices, where as if you have built in cooking appliances then you will have much more choice and be able to tailor your cooking area to exactly what you want. Also I think that generally you will get better quality and value for money going down the built in cooking appliance route than having a range cooker.

  • Hi CK,

Built in (and indeed high level ovens) would be my preference but we've inherited a kitchen with a 100cm gap where an existing smeg range was previously installed and removed by the previous owner. There's a spashback and extractor hood in place so rather than spending lots of money redesigning the kitchen we thought it made sense to put something 100cm wide in the space. As for induction vs gas....I love gas, have always chosen it for hobs but worry about the ongoing cost of it. In my head, induction is as speedy or speedier than gas and cheaper - I'm willing to be corrected on that though! Induction also appeals as I have a very adventurous 2 year old and the concept of a stove top that isn't hot appeals.

Would it, in your option, be cheaper/better to buy carcasses to fit in the space to integrate ovens/a hob into?

    Thanks!
    Sue.
  • We installed a new kitchen this year and as we dont have gas we went for a Stoves induction range and so far have been really pleased with it. It looks lovely and I am now a big fan of induction hobs, heats up/cools so quickly and so easy to keep clean.

    Hi soomagoo

I understand. Yes if you have a 100cm space where a range cooker once was, with the stainless steel back panel and extractor still there then the simplest thing is to put in another 100cm wide range. I wouldn't bother modifying the existing kitchen to fit in built in appliances. The amount of work needed would normally be virtually as much as replacing the kitchen, so if the rest of the kitchen is basically OK and serviceable then I think a new range is the best option.

I don't know if I would get carried away with worrying a lot about the cost of gas v electric, as induction top ranges are quite a bit more expensive than gas top ones. However, induction is more controllable in general terms than gas and definitely cleaner in all respects, the atmosphere in the kitchen, as you are not burning a carbon based fuel in doors and also easier to keep clean. But a gas top on a range is more versatile though, as you can use any pans and often there are lots of specific accessories you can buy with the cooker like cast iron griddle plates, simmer plates and wok rings, all of which can't be used on an induction top.

An induction top range 100cm wide, if it were me, it would be a Steel Cuisine. Ideally though, the one to go for would be Lacanche but although they do several 100cm wide they need a 4cm 'air break' - gap to each side, which you probably haven't got.

I would definitely recommend you visit one or 2 range cooker specialist showrooms in your area to see the cookers in the flesh, as looking on line gives you no sense of the build quality. Unfortunately the vast majority of range cookers out there are 'wannabe' products, so when you go and look at the cookers view them in the same way as you would when you would be looking at new cars, look at the weight of components like the doors, look at the quality of the hinges, do the doors close without a 'tinny' click. When the doors are closed do all the panel gaps look even, look at the quality of the enameling, are there many plastic components visible? You would be amazed how many range cookers at over £3,000 have plastic knobs on them!

Anyway, hopefully this gives you some ideas.

  • We have a Rangemaster induction hob. 7 years old now and still very happy with it, the induction hob is quick and the oven loses no heat what so ever.

It seems about mid-range in price compared to a Lacanche which is just crazy prices.
