I have just done a quick test - ran a 1hr 45min movie from sd card - brightness around 50% sound normal - WIRELESS OFF - Bluetooth OFF- GPS OFF as those are not needed and it only used 13% of the battery.

So turn OFF what you do not need and your usage from the battery will be better.
  • Thanks for the help and advice.

I streamed a HD movie off Blinkbox last night, over 2 hours in length.
My battery was on around 25 - 30% before I started.
Because I connect to my tv via hdmi cable and I wanted to charge at the same time I had to use a longer usb cable than I do normally.
At the end of the movie...probably about 2 hours 15 minutes later because of tea breaks :).....I checked the tablet to find it hadn't been charging at all and was down to 2% left.

Seems not all cables are equal.

Anyway considering they reckon 9 hours of video playback, from my experience that seems to be entirely feasible

Many/most of the USB cables longer than the one supplied are not up to carrying the current for the Hudl - and for that matter other tablets.

The longer the cable, and the items that are turned on, the bigger the voltage drop, so if the voltage at the tablet is not high enough then it will not switch itself to charging as well as running the tablet.

Make sure that anything you are not using - wireless - GPS -Bluetooth is turned off, that will reduce the amount of current required, and you may get away with using a longer USB cable.

You can get (Ebay 99p) an adapter that has micro usb plug to normal usb socket (female to male) - this is about 4-5 inches long so the voltage drop on it will be smaller or get one with out the cable (1.25 -1.35) - search ebay for

micro usb male to female usb

and you will see both types, make sure you get the correct version !

I have not suggested any particular supplier as it would be unfair to the many sellers - make your own decision.

Also if you do run it flat - then it may not start after you have plugged in the charger - leave the charger plugged in and on for 10 mins or so - then it will re-start.

If you are wanting to use it in the car, plugged in to the cigarette lighter socket - then make sure that the car adapter you buy can supply 5volts at 2amps current rating- many on sale are less than that - so if you overload a lower spec one then it could get very hot -melt/catch fire.

If you see one that does not state its current rating then avoid.
  • I'm also having battery problems with a hudl I got my son for xmas. He only seems to get a couple of ours out of his playing games. It seems to spend more time on charge than in use :-(

I would be happy if I got 5 hours out of mine ;)

Didn't you notice when you first got it that the brightness was turned to the lowest possible, I'm sure it would last a lot longer it it was left like that, even though it was too bloomin dull to actually use :rotfl:

I've had enough of mine, it's going back.

I now get 3 hours max battery life, it doesn't matter if I turn off wifi, turn the brightness down, delete all the apps from the cache, 3 hours max is all I get.

Sorry to reinstate an old thread!

Peachy if you see this - did you take yours back??

I haven't had any major issues with battery until last night ... Charged it as normal from almost dead (red battery etc) it told me it was charged.... literally downloaded "call the midwife" (one episode) and played a game for 10mins and the battery was literally draining visibly! From charged to dead in about 35mins :eek:

How is everyone elses HUDL doing? I haven't had any other issues although I have to say, the amount of updates and virus checking it does when first turned on seems EXCESSIVE to say the least!?! Takes about 10mins after switching on to have stopped updating... could this be the problem? Can I turn off updates for all apps unless I decide to update them?? Or is it always auto? Have got the anti virus AVG Anti Virus .....
Baldrick, does it have to be this way? Our valued friendship ending with me cutting you up into strips and telling the prince that you walked over a very sharp cattle grid in an extremely heavy hat?

Yes, I did take it back, I got a full refund and bought a Samsung Galaxytab 3 instead.

I phoned the tech line first and told them I'd performed all their 'power saving' tips but was still only getting a few hours life out of it, that it was losing power when not even in use and I needed to charge it twice a day. He said they'd had loads returned with the same problem. He gave me a reference number to quote to take it back to store for a refund or exchange.

I no longer turn mine off at night so it's on 24/7 and I'm still getting up to 4 days out of a charge....although 3 is more like the norm
