Long Lost Bond

I'm after some advice please ...
Over the years, my wife has bought various bonds or set up various savings accounts for the kids, and then forgets about them, often not even giving them a change of address. I'm now attempting to sort these out, and get any long lost money that has been squirreled away in these accounts/bonds.
We have a certificate for an Abbey National Children's Saving Bond for £500 dating back to 2000. It was opened at an address that we moved away from in 2003 and whilst I doubt whether she explicitly gave them a change of address for this bond, being a current account holder too, she may well have updated her customer address back then.
We've really no idea whether we ever received the money - it may have been sent as a cheque to the old address for all I know - and without having any paid date or amount then it is difficult for us to reconcile it to our bank accounts.
Santander have no record of it on the system and say that they would have got rid of it 6 years after closure due to the DPA, although I thought the 6-year rule relates to when they ceased being a customer (i.e. all accounts closed) rather than to a specific account closure (she is still a customer). It may be that it never migrated from Abbey IT systems into Santander's when they merged in 2004, especially if it had closed by the time that bonds data migration took place.
Anything we can do to get this money (assuming we never received it)? Do Santander have an obligation to have kept a record of it whilst she remained a customer or are they legally entitled to have deleted it from their system after closure?
