First time planning for abroad, planning on Canada - any advice

Hi all,
Having never actually been abroad other then when I was too young to remember, myself and my other half are thinking about going to Toronto/Niagara Falls during October half term (22-26th Oct), with a few days leeway with TOIL.
We live near Birmingham, and thought it would be far less hassle to go from BHX than London or similar. Looking around, I've seen some cheapish flights (c 70 each way with Zoom), but the cheapest package I've seen is c. 600 each for a dual centre holiday with FlyGlobeSpan. Is it worth trying to sort everything out independently? I've seen it knock £100 off the price going to/from London, but then we'd have to sort out trains from Birmingham on top of everything else.
Any advice appreciated

I think that as it's your first trip abroad that it'd be much less worry to go for a package. Try Canadian Affair, they're usually cheapest for flights, maybe their packages are good too!
Have a great time, it'll be wonderful!

Hi JMFD
Are you just thinking of a week because you HAVE to stay longer if you can, we had 2 weeks last May/June and that wasn't long enough.
There is so much to do around that area.
We flew with Canadian Affair, stayed in a motel and hired a car, all seperately. If you're happy about driving abroad then thge freedom is much better than sticking to other people's agendasI haven't got one!0 -
Myself and Mrs Baker are going to Toronto for 4 days, 22 - 26 November. We have travelled DIY-style quite a few times now so are comfortable about sorting everything out ourselves.
We got our flights with Air Canada from Heathrow for about £280 each (inc taxes) and booked the Marriott Eaton Centre hotel - see THIS post for details. We will be taking a day trip to Niagara Falls while we're there.
I agree 100% with cheekymole about having the freedom to do whatever whenever. This space has been intentionally left blank0 -
We're constricted to the school holidays, and wanted to go in October rather than the summer holidays, so just a week. Also, neither of us have driving licences. (shock I know), hopefully it will change by the time we go away however (my test is the end of july)
Looking into Canadian affair for a few dual centre options at the mo, and will look into Glenn's findings.0 -
Good luck with the driving test but I'm not sure whether you would need to have passed for a year or so before hiring a car.
Have a meal in the revolving restaurant CN tower, elevation is free with a booking, if going to niagara a pass can be bought to do all the attractions at acheaper priceI haven't got one!0
