building regs for skylight in garage

Hi, wondered if anyone could answer a quick query..

Are building regs required for installing skylights into a pitched roof of a detached double garage, used solely as a garage i.e. not habitable space etc

Thanks

Yes you need regs as you are changing the roof and the load bearing, even if the velux fits between two rafters you still need them.

Most builders will say you don't but that's because most don't know that you do, I only found out myself recently.

If you look on the website for Velux it will clearly state you need regs as well.

But is it really not worth worrying about the regs as no council would ever enforce and the chances of it coming up on a survey are almost nil.
  • Thanks...its on a house purchase and its been picked up by our conveyancer. Didn't get mentioned on the survey as you say
