    If the gift was for me, I'd choose some quality circular needles (probably interchangeable, as mentioned above) and some pretty stitch markers, which can be bought with little charms (dogs, cats, flowers etc ) attached.

    i,ve just seen this thread, my mum is a keen knitter, she always uses rigid metal needles, are the interchangeable ones a huge change to adjust to, are they better than the rigid needles?

    No, not at all. They're essentially circular needles but more flexible, in that you get different length cables and different sized tips so that you can combine them to make any size needle you want. If you're knitting a large blanket or a jumper, for example, you'll struggle to get all the stitches onto a straight needle.

    The circulars and interchangeables are also easier on the wrists and hands because instead of having all the stitches and the weight of the project piled onto the left or right needle, they're spread across the middle, more evenly distributed.
