Any Gifts that Knitters Would Enjoy?

Options
Hi all!

My girlfriend took up knitting some time ago, and it's persisted long enough for me to deem it a genuine hobby, so I'm thinking that this might make for an extra Christmas opportunity! The problem is that I have very little idea what I could possibly get; the only two that have occurred to me are either a design book or some sort of knitting kit (not sure if they exist, nor what they'd contain, but I'll throw it out there anyway).

So yeah, any knitters out there with some enlightened esoteric knowledge into what would make a decent gift that an outsider may not have thought of?

Thanks in advance!

  • I'm not actually a knitter I do other crafts so I know hobbycraft have lots of nice gifts for knitters. Is there one near you?

They do have online shop but have a lot more in store.

Go to one of the shops and see what they suggest. They will know their bestsellers or their quirky stuff and you will most likely have an inkling if your gf will like it.

I've got an even better idea. Take her for a surprise day out here http://www.iknit.org.uk/shop.html and let her buy what she wants up to a budget. (I found them on a google so you may want to check they still exist before you go).
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.
  • It's a tough one as knitting is so personal...
Maybe something that everyone would use like stitch holders, row counters..little things like that.
Or a set of needles. .see what type she uses as in wooden or metal and get a set of really nice ones in various sizes...that could be expensive though so it depends if this is an extra pressie or the main one.
Perhaps a subscription to a knitting magazine? I love it when my mag plops onto the doormat.
Or you can get balls of wool that make one project...say a chunky scarf. You buy the one big ball of wool and the pattern in on the paper band on the ball.
PAYDBX 2016 #55 100% paid! :j Officially bad debt free...don't count my mortgage.
Now to start saving...it's a whole new world!!
  • I don't know if you needed a main present or just a few small items but my mum is also a knitter and I was looking for items that will be helpful for her but also a bit of fun at the same time and came across these http://www.notonthehighstreet.com/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&term=knitting&search=find I think the needle bags or just a bag for her to store her wool in is a great idea :)

I'm a seriously addicted knitter and couldn't get by without my interchangeable needles. The wooden ones from Knit Pro are my favourite but you can also get metal if she prefers metal needles. The starter kit is on Amazon:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Symfonie-Circular-Needle-Interchangeable-Starter/dp/B004FZ2VGW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1385116946&sr=8-1&keywords=knit+pro+starter

    or cheaper on Ebay:

You can then add to the set by buying different size needles and cables (for a few pounds each, again on Amazon, Ebay, various knitting websites). These are always on my Christmas list (just because I got 3.75mm needles last year doesn't mean I don't need 4mm needles this year!).

Otherwise project bags, pattern books, stitch holders, and needle cases always go down well. And if she's not on Ravelry yet, sign her up - it's the best knitty present you can get (and it's free!).

How about a nice knitting bag to keep her work in? Cath Kidston do lovely ones, such as this:

Wool, wool, wool and more wool. That's all I want, in any case.

Not a knitter (but keep having strong urges), a few weeks ago in Lidl I saw a knitting kit where you can knit a scarf. I'm sure you'll be able to get this stuff somewhere else too if no longer available in Lidl.
  • My mum loves to knit, and a couple of years ago I did her a wonderball only using wool instead of crepe streamers.

I picked out a nice ball of yarn (I went for bamboo yarn which doesn't easily snag, you'll see why) and a pattern that could be made with just one ball. (My mum mostly knits for babies, so it was easy to find a one ball pattern, but you could probably find a pattern for accessories that only needs one ball.

I re-wound the ball, starting with a pincushion in the middle. As I went I added other small knitting-themed trinkets - row counters, stitch markers, cute buttons, little sew on decorations, safety pins, tape measure etc. I also threw in a couple of non-knitting items, like a cheap necklace. The idea is that as she knits, the objects fall out and she gets little surprises along the way.

My mum really loved it. The thing with a lot of crafters is that they like having a stash of little bits and bobs like the buttons and ribbons, so even if you don't choose one that's right for their main project, they will enjoy getting them.

If you go to any sort of knitting shop or craft shop with yarn, the assistants will almost certainly help you pick out an appropriate pattern or yarn.

That's a lovely idea, will have to try to remember that for my mom's birthday! x
