Athletics Weekly has teamed up with a number of top brands and event organisers to offer readers the chance to win a different prize every day in the run up to Christmas.
Just like opening the door on your advent calendar, instead of a picture or a chocolate for you to enjoy there will be a new competition featured on athleticsweekly.com for you to enter to help you enjoy the countdown to the festivities as much as possible!
Just as you should only open each door of your advent calendar on the correct day in December, our advent calendar competitionswill also only be available for one day – so be sure to check the website regularly for new prizes and get your entries in quick.

Day 2 http://www.athleticsweekly.com/news/adventcalendar2/
Win a Nike Storm Fly running jacket from Run-Fast
Question: Who was the first British athlete to run a mile in under 3 minutes 50 seconds?
Answer: Steve Ovett ? Can someone please double check?
Who was the first man under 3:50 for the mile?
John Walker. John Walker (New Zealand) broke Filbert Bayi's (Tanzania) record in Goteborg in 1975 with 3:49.4. Steve Ovett (Britain) held the mile record twice, and Steve Scott set the American record at 3:47.69 in 1982 (and it was still standing 22 years later on the 50th anniversary). Walker later improved to 3:49.06 in 1982.
From here it says Sebastian Coe? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_record_progression_for_the_mile_run#StaySafeWishing you a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year0 -
Seb Coe according to this:

3:48.95 Sebastian Coe United Kingdom 17 July 1979 Oslo0 -
Is the duplicate entry on the advent list see (5 competitions back) ? or is it a 2nd advent calendar on the same site???0

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_record_progression_for_the_mile_run is a poor reference for this as there is the possibility that Ovett or Cram ran under 3:50 but over 3:49.4 between 12/08/75 and 17/07/79. http://www.gbrathletics.com/uk/mb99.htm is a better reference (scroll down to 1 mile) and it confirms that Seb Coe's 3:49:0 was the first time.0
