Barclaycard Mercers but I don't owe!!

in Credit cards
Hi everyone,
I had a phone call today from a man saying he was from Mercers and that he needed to take me through security before speaking to me. I asked what it was about as I didn't know who he was and was running behind at work already. He got rather shirty saying he was from Mercers Barclaycard but I had to go through the security questions.
I haven't had a Barclaycard for 5 or so years so advised him to phone me back in my lunchbreak. He was even less happy, advised that there was a problem with my account that I would have to speak to him about and he'd call me again at 12.30.
He hasn't called. I cleared all the money I had with Barclaycard and was never in arrears. I requested all info they had on me in writing under the FOI act earlier this year (for divorce) which I paid the £10 with a cheque, which they cashed, and only ever recieved the statements, nothing else.
I have googled Mercers and read that they use scare tactics etc but everything I have found is from people that were in debt, which I am not. I am quite worried as I will need to apply for a mortgage soon and I don't want this to be jeopodised by something that is not correct. My credit score has always been excellent.
Has anyone else had this experience or provide any advise, I am at the end of my tether of having my life screwed up by other peoples mistakes and stupidity.
:(
Sorry it's such a long post!!

I would just ignore it OP. Sounds a bit dodgy if you ask me.
Have you called Barclaycard directly?
Do you still have you confirmation letter that your account was closed?DEBT FREE AND PROUD'Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt'0 -
I would get copies of all 3 of your credit reports just to be safe (or not) in the knowledge that you have settled the balance with barclaycard. If it was 5 yrs ago should still be on your record.0

I had a call from someone claiming to be from my energy supplier, E.On today.
Then, on further iterrogation, he said he was an authorised consultant working on behalf of my energy supplier. E.On
(He got a bit shirty wiith me too, saying I could speak with his manager if nececessary. I said I'm happy to speak to whoever as long as they know who they work for!)
When I asked who he actually worked for, he gave me the name of a website, and that website is registered to a company that was struck off in 2012.
Checking the contact details on the website itself, the limited company that claimed to be behind it was struck off last month.
And I'm not even supplied by E.On for either gas, electricity or anything. :rotfl:
(I think I used to be supplied by E.On about 5 years ago)
I'm so glad I read this thread. I've now requested copies of my credit files from all 3 agencies. :cool:0 -

Hi there
Sorry to hear about your experience, none too pleasant.
If Mercers have something to genuinely pursue you for, they will surely be able to put it into writing. The fact that they have called you only to ask you security questions suggests to me that this is some kind of "fishing expedition".
In my experience, the narkier these people are on the phone, the less foundation they have for hounding you. If he was confident that you owed something he surely wouldn't have anything to get irritable about...
It's worth tracking your credit report for now, just to look out for anything untoward. You can trial Experian's Credit Expert package but cancel before the end of the free trial period if you don't want to keep it.

Thanks for the replies! I thought it sounded a bit dodgy as why leave it so long if there was an issue and why would a debt collector be the first I hear of it if there was.
I will leave it a few days to see if he phones back then I'll contact Barclaycard direct. I shall also get a copy of my credit report which I intended to do closer to the time of applying for the mortgage but it seems wise to do it sooner!
Thank you all for your help and kindness :-)0 -
Thought I'd update. I had a repeat call from Mercers at work which I wasn't there for so I phone Barclaycard to find out what was going on.
Essentially when I had made a freedom of information request for data they had on me a few months ago someone had placed a £2 charge on my account incorrectly. I hadn't been made aware of this again due to errors they made on the account. This has led to penalty fees and a subsequent non-payment marker into my credit file, again in error.
It has taken quite some time on the phone sorting it out. Initially the chap cleared all charges and fees and thought that would suffice, it was me that had to bring up them needing to correct my credit file and chase this up with a further phone call. Am now waiting for this all to be confirmed in writing that it has been done and I shall get my file to check after that.
Am so angry with Barclaycard for making such an almighty mess and they hadn't even sent everything they should of from my data request, which they say they will now send. Just goes to show how close an eye you need to keep on what is held on you in these files!!!0
