Big thanks to Admiral

Everyone hates on this company. But I just want to say a big thanks to Admiral group.

I started driving on March 2012. 4 months before that I took out a hire car and pranged it on an "at fault" accident.

(n.b. before the MSE crusaders get on my back. I've held a license since 2006, but has no real driving experience since passing)

When I got my car on March2012, theortically nobody would have insured me. I wouldn't insure me if I was an underwriter. Just look at the stats. Guy with no NCB and no driving history causes a collision in a hire car! That's a no hoper there.

Well long story short Admiral, Bell, Elephant (All Admiral group insurers) came in at £1200 p.a. insurance. Beating the next best insurers by at least a grand.

Many people say Admiral group are rubbish, have poor customer service etc. I don't think customer service is something I'm that concerned about as far as insurance goes - unless you're crashing your car every other month I wouldn't worry about it.

You got your car back in March 2012, but you're "thanking" Admiral now for taking £1200 off you for insurance 18 months ago?

The only test of insurers is when you actually need them. Just because a handful of companies dominate the online insurance market and provide cheap quotes, doesn't mean they are worthy of your praise yet.

To be fair, when someone wrote my car off last December, Admiral were really pretty good. Admittedly, I had to do some legwork to get the payout I wanted for my car, but they weren't difficult to deal with in the slightest.

It was just a pity that, despite the other party being fully to blame, and me keeping my entire NCD and excess, Admiral then decided to hike my renewal up from £200ish to £850 or so. Cue finding a new insurance company, with whome I am paying £200 again :D
  • Insurers dont ask what your history beyond NCD and claims is. If you've had your license for 50 years but say you have no claims nor NCD they have no idea if that because you've been on your partners insurance for decades and driving high mileage or that you never drove past the day you passed your test.

Admiral are a budget provider, it is reflected in how long it takes to get through to them on the phone and the cover they offer on their policies. For most people this is probably adequate enough though with the one exception of those that bought their car brand new in the last 12 months in which case the lack of new vehicle replacement would be a potential issue.

I have used them for years and when you finally get through to them on the phone they are really friendly and fairly efficient. Only because of having a new car did I move away this year but the misses car is still with them
  • strange, I have never had any trouble getting through to them. I changed my car 3 weeks ago and my call was answered within 30 sec's also my revised policy doc's and cover note were up on line within half hour.
