I remember reading something about the Yorkshire and Chelsea getting together. Did anyone else see it and is there any truth in it?

there was a piece in mail on sunday around a month or so ago when yorkshire and chelsea are reported to have both denied that they had been in merger talks
im not sure what caused someone to ask them the question in the first place, obv someone must have had a reason for coming up with the pairing, perhaps they had been talking but ended talks and someone leaked the talks to mail on sunday, who asked both the societies the question which got answered with a reported denial0 -
People suggest mergers based on supposed geographical synergies/matches all the time - it doesn't mean there was ever a realistic proposal.
Equally well, a denial from the two parties doesn't prove there weren't talks, either - it's standard form to deny everything up until the minute a deal is announced.0 -

id have thought yorkshire and leeds and/or leeds and skipton would have been a more supposed geographical synergy, or even newcastle and one of these
humerous synergies are
As Derby beat West Brom in the playoffs maybe they will go for the Derbyshire
Yorkshire & Barnsley = Yorkiebar BS
Nationwide + Saffron + Cambridge + Ipswich + Norwich & Peterborough = to form Nationwide Anglia
Nationwide could take over every other building society and still be called the Nationwide because it operates nationwide!
one thing is for sure the next merger will probably be a pairing that was least expected0 -
That's why I said synergies or matches. I meant synergies as in branch overlap and hence closures, and matches as in lack of branch overlap and hence wide national coverage without any need for branch closures. Sorry if that wasn't very clear.
There was a bit of suggestion that Portman should have merged with Yorkshire or a similar Northern-dominated society, as their branches would have complemented each other well.
Continuing your theme of comedic combinations, Alliance & Leicester could take over around 6 societies in Leicester(shire) without any need to change name. Unfortunately nor would they make much difference to A&L's size as all bar 2 (Hinckley & Rugby and Market Harborough) are ridiculously small.0 -

Maybe merging or taking over any other society might make A & L more efficient. I think they are a rubbish bank (shares doing OK though). Still waiting for a response to a complaint letter sent weeks ago and I did read in The Times a while ago that the Ombudsman gets more complaints about them than anyone else. The interest on the ISA I took out with them last year has actually gone down despite the bank rate rises.0
