Home Heating System

Hi Folks,

I have an Oil Powered Central Heating System with a Hot-water Storage Tank / Cold Water Storage Tank with Expansion Tank and all my Radiators have TRV's.

I have realized that I am using 300 Liters of oil per month which seams rather high.

I am wanting to fit a Thermostat as the current controller is just a simple timer with 3 settings. The house does get very warm even with the TRV's so I know the boiler is probably over and above 23 degrees which is clearly using more oil because the boiler is not told to cut off.

Can someone advise me of any Replacement Products. I have been Looking at http://www.honeywelluk.com/products/Programmable-Thermostats/TPI/CM907-7-Day-Programmable-Thermostat/

Can someone tell me is it just a simple case of pulling the Old Timer off the wall and replacing it with this thermostat?

In the Kitchen the radiators are at the other side of the room from where the Thermostat will be so perhaps a wireless one would work better as to heat the far end of the kitchen would mean the rest of the house would need to be very hot.

Look at fitting a combi if your current boiler is old. fuel consumption will
    improve.

Your boiler will cut off when water temp is reached. the trv's cut on and of if the room gets too desired temp.

if its too hot in a room turn the trv down.

;) Thats the PAT answer these days, but it is NOT necessarily correct ;)

:) A Wireless, or RF frequency, thermostat will definitely help, but is not just a case of a simple replacement as the receiver has to control the correct elements of the system, as per the settings/responses it gets from the remote stat, not just the boiler ;)

The 23 degrees you state, is not only a little high, 21 degrees is the nominally required room temperature, and it is NOT controlled by the boiler stat.
The boiler stat only controls the water temperature within the system, nominally required to be 72 degrees for a radiator system, although higher will heat the system and property quicker.
It is the output from the radiators that determines room temperatures, and is at present in your case, controlled by the TRV settings ;)

Re the kitchen issue, a fixed stat will usually be best placed in a room that is the colder and has no other means of control, i.e. a hallway with no TRV, but a remote stat can of course be move around with you to wherever you want the heat ;)

No matter what system you use there will always be differences in room temperatures according to size, heat inputs and settings of controls, that has to be determined by you and how you set controls to your needs :)

  • 300 a month seems a little high but depends on your house we use around 2500 a year in a 5 bedroom house but I won't let the wife put the heating on until December ( then its like an early present for her).

Our boiler is around 30 years old as well and has never once gone wrong and the fellow who services it once a year tells me that its a great boiler that could last for another 30 years.
Neighbours who have had new boilers tell me I am stupid for not replacing it but at nearly 3k for a new one I would never see that return as new boilers seem to have a shelf life of 10 years.
