Part Exchange vs MOT Help Needed
Hi All,
We have bought a new car from Vauxhall. We signed the papers in June/July in which my Mrs' car was valued at £4000. The issue is, we have waited the expected 6 months for the car to be built and imported and now expected to receive the car on Monday next week. HOWEVER, the MOT expites on Saturday THIS week. Should I expect anything from the dealership along the lines of 'its not worth £4000 now?'
Any advice on how best to procede would be much appreciated.
Thanks

What does your contract say?
Does it guarantee that price whatever or does it make stipulations as to condition or mileage or anything else?0 -

Nothing. In the section regarding part exchange details it just records make, model, milage and offered value (4K) and in fact there is a section within that part that has a section for MOT expiry but they have left it blank. In the written terms the section on PX only states the value can change if the mileage is of significant difference - which thats not an issue as its in keeping with the average. So you think they have no stance on it and we can offer to leave the car Saturday when it expires or on the drive until the new cars ready?

Just get the car MOT'd. After waiting for six months for a car, there's still a chance there will be a glitch and you will have no transport at all come Monday. That is of course, unless you know that the car will fail the MOT in spectacular terms.0

Thanks and fair point. Its 5 years old so I could hand on heart say it wouldnt fail an MOT although it hasn't failed one yet. Even so, isn't the point that even if it passed as predicted, that we are looking to save money by not incurriing any costs at this late stage? We of course have considered any further delay and not have a car to get around but we both have lifts to work on standby so no issue there with regard to not having any car.
Thanks again.0 -
For the sake of the deal falling through I would MOT the car, council about £30ish or Vauxhall themselves only charged me £27 last MOT. It's a £4k car, not a rusting heap destined for scrap.
Best thing is to phone the dealer and ask as they are the only ones who will give you a definite answer.
Six month wait, Mokka or Cascada?0 -
I'd be spending the £30 on an MOT as well.
Can they say it's not worth £4000 any more and try knocking it down...... would you want to risk it for the sake of £30?0 -
The offer is probably on the assumption that it's maintained as normal i.e. MOT'd when it runs out, even if that's 2 days before the trade in.
You also need to bear in mind that with the expired MOT you can't drive it to the dealership, so would need to leave it there from the Saturday or get it on trade plates or something. And as already mentioned, no MOT means that if there are any issues or delays (say there's something you want fixed before taking delivery) then you're stuck without a car.
All in, it's probably much easier for you to put it through an MOT unless you ask the dealership and they tell you not to bother.0 -

If they booked the car in for an MOT at the Vauxhall garage on Monday before the pickup time on the new car they technically can legally drive it there.
Although I'd just get the MOT done well before to be safe. Worrying about £30 seems a bit daft when there's a chance your new car will lose 100x that in the first six months.
OP - did you get a decent amount off the new car and £4k trade or just £4k off the new car RRP for yours?0 -
It depends on where the Vauxhall garage is; don't you need to go to one relatively local?
Also, it'd still mean paying for the MOT or arranging with the garage to not require the MOT.0 -
