Which tablet should I buy?

Hi all

I have a budget of £400 to buy a tablet but don't know which one to get. The person I'm buying it for will use it for general browsing and wants to have a Spreadsheet etc on it

Any help gratefully apprieciated

The Google Nexus 7 is a good choice in my opinion. Good price and can do most things needed.

If he's going to be viewing spreadsheets perhaps a 10.1" screen will be better. Cisco has mentioned a couple of good ones but you might also consider the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1" or Microsoft Surface Pro 10.6".

I would check with them about how they want to input. If they are using spreadsheets doing this via touch onto screen might be an issue. I know I developed RSI from too much screen touch and have had to go back to a keyboard!

I think they want a touch screen one as he has recently sold hs laptop to fund a new one.

Defiantly need a 10 inch screen I think though

I recently bought a used Asus Transformer TF101, the first-gen Transformer tablet. It has a handy keyboard accessory that has a second battery and an SD card slot:



Shown here running Kingsoft Office. I've upgraded mine to run a newer version of Android but in its stock form it's not bad - the card slots make up for the limited storage. And it has a pair of USB slots so you can use a USB mouse. The problem is that if you carry around the dock and the mouse you end up with a package that takes up as much space and weighs the same as a small laptop.

The important thing here is the spreadsheet, and your choice largely depends on whether it's crucial that he can edit and generate Excel-compatible spreadsheets or not. If he needs Excel then I would recommend a Microsoft Surface RT, because it runs a slightly cut-down version of Excel (no macros). Unfortunately the RT isn't very appealing beyond that. It has a very limited market and it's locked-down.

There is of course the Google Docs Spreadsheet, which is largely platform-independent. I understand the iPad has a pretty good selection of productivity tools although you have to pay, but not much. If I was expecting to do a lot of productivity work on the move I'd take my ThinkPad instead.

i think the spreadsheet part is just a novelty on his behalf, i defo need a 10inch screen though

ive got an ipad but only bought the 16gb at the time not thinking and now i have to keep deleting things
