Puzzled by Kindle gremlins when moving to next chapter

I've had my kindle since Christmas 2011. Its currently got 1350 items on it but I suspect quite a lot of these are samples..... (it always seems like a good idea at the time)
I've just finishing reading I am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes and whilst I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it, I found it very frustrating when I would press to move to the next chapter except the kindle would not display the next chapter and instead would display the home page with an error message (when it happens again, I'll post the message but it was something along the lines of the item couldn't be opened, if you have purchased it from amazon, please download again).
I thought it might be a bug in the I am Pilgrim book but I've downloaded another book today and started reading it and the same thing is happening! I suspect the issue is its getting full but I would be interested to know if anyone else has had a similar problem?
edited to add that the error message I am getting is
The selected item could not be opened. If you purchased this item from Amazon, delete the item and redownload it from Archived Items available in home.
All the books I have on my kindle have come from Amazon, either free books or are books I have paid for.

If you think your Kindle is overfull why don't you just remove books you no longer want from the device? (Highlight title on home page then left arrow)
They will still be on Amazon Manage your Kindle page if you don't want to delete them permanently.
If you are reading all the book why do you select the jump to next chapter instead of the next page?0 -

A quick highlight of your text and right click to search led me straight to Amazon Kindle support pages where the recommended fix is to reboot your Kindle.0 -
Sounds like it could be an indexing corruption.
Try a restart (NOT a factory reset) ... Hold the power button on for a count of 20 and the Kindle should then reboot itself ... walk away and have a cup of tea whilst it finishes rebooting and settles down.... thanks all. I've deleted quite a lot of the samples from my kindle and sorry I did mean that I press the button for the next page to move to the next chapter (rather than I'm selecting the next chapter from the contents page)
I did have a nose at the kindle support but nothing helpful for multiple deletions of books nor anything that I could find that seemed to mirror the issue I have been having. I was confused by the reboot advice! For some reason I was thinking there would be a special button for this!0
