In our family, we've spent too many years storing and then subsequently getting rid of stuff bought that wasn't really wanted or of much use, so we now ask each other what we want for Christmas.

I'm curious as to what kind of things other people have asked for. What have your parents, SO's, kids and relatives asked for?

  • I really try to buy things that people will actually use i.e. no toiletries! Everyone I know seems to hate that.
My parents birthdays are both the same week as Christmas- Which is a joy!
My dad always asks for DVDs, he doesn't have time to go to the cinema and appreciates me keeping an eye out for ones he'll like. My mums the same with books. I try and give them these for their birthdays.
This year they've actually asked for a food hamper for Christmas- brilliant when you're trying to save money.
  • My mother is one of those 'oh you don't need to get me anything' types...it irritates me no end because whatever I get, I worry that I'm wasting my money. I'd much rather have a general idea ie something for the garden, perfume etc.

My brother is the opposite...he will go so far as to tell you the make, model, brand and suggested stockists of whatever he wants...which to me just ruins the surprise!

Husband has asked for socks, and drops not so subtle hints about CDs etc but leaves the 'big present' up to me...it's usually something for the two of us though like a mini break somewhere.

Nobody asks for specifics in our family as I wants never gets; (albeit hints are permissible). The surprise is not knowing what the gift is. Should I receive socks or diamond rocks, they will be received with the equal gratefulness of being gifted. ;)

  • My kids are happy with anything I get them which is nice. I don't have any family of my own but husband and his family are a nightmare. He is scrooge at xmas over everything from the cost of food to the cost of heating presents everything. He has arranged with his family to only swap cards this year and he never appreciates anything I get him and never buys me anything nice so this year ive told him its cards only too, I only said it because he never truly puts any thought into anything, he doesn't budget for gifts, he doesn't ask me what I would like, he doesn't actually have a clue what I would like and puts no effort in whatsoever, even if he did have a clue he wouldn't want to pay over 10 quid on anything for me without moaning about the cost. So if I want a decent xmas present I will have to buy my own.
  • We always give some ideas as there is nothing worse, or more wasteful than getting something that will not be used or is not wanted!

We all have Amazon wish lists and everyone picks something off there which suits their budget.

My kids haven't put much on theirs this year but I enjoy finding things which will appeal to them.

I have bought my husband and youngest son an hour each on a flight simulator so they can play Top Gun!! Youngest has clothes, football boots,a computer game on his list.

The older lads are into the gym and technology so gym stuff, Iphone case with battery built in, waterproof mp2 player. And clothes. Oh, and a sky diving simulator experience each.

Aside from spouse and children I only buy for five nieces children (all done via Amazon) and SIL/MIL. I have not yet got them anything.

I don't mind the thinking and buying, it is the wrapping I hate!

  • Dh wants itunes vouchers (although I don't think we can afford to buy each other this year)
Ds1 who will be 7 on 29thdec wants a razor stunt scooter and new Nerf gun
Dd who's 5 wants a sewing machine and monster high dolls
Ds2 who's 2, always wants to bring the drum set in elc home with us, so I'm taking it that he wants drums!

Everyone else gets what I think they like and appreciate, although on occasion, my little brother(14) nephew(16) and niece (19) will ask for money if they are saving for something big (ie. a couple of years ago my nephew wanted some earphones that cost £250, so I gave him money that year), but this year it's all gifts

My sister has asked for some posh shampoo and conditioner, my mum has asked for some replacement slippers and my granddad wants WD40! Otherwise I've not been asked specifically for anything. On the other hand this year I've written a list of things I'd like - the only reason I've done this is so I can control how much is spent so there are no items over about £5 plus everybody thinks I'm hard to buy for so continually keep asking me and get fed up when I'm vague. I'll be honest I'd be happy with some chocolate fingers, nivea face cream and hot chocolate! :-)

Nice to be appreciated :( - he must be a joy to have around in December

I get that some people don't like Christmas - but why do some of them have to ruin it for others as well?
