Old Alliance and Leicester credit card

We closed an Alliance and Leicester credit card in 2008 and think we were paying PPI and should not have been but have not kept any credit card bills apart from the closing one which has our account number on it. We have written to Santander but they have written back saying it is MBNA and nothing to do with them. As this was closed less than 6 years ago shouldn't they be able to find proof and our credit card statements. Help
