Can car insurance cancel my insurance after a total loss?

Had a total loss, my fault, got the cheque. Then got a letter saying I had 14 days to give them new car details or else my policy will be cancelled and as it's a total loss I won't get a refund. I payed in full.

Can they cancel my policy if I don't get a new car in 14 days?

There is nothing in my policy that says this, and my insurance have said themselves that it isn't in my policy, it is just standard practice. Where do I stand?

you stand needing to either buy a new car to have on cover or have it lapse which is standard.. No refund of premium since they've paid out on a total loss...

But if it isn't in the policy how can it be binding?

I'd like longer than 14 days to get a car, and I'd like to have the insurance I've paid for.

if they were not cancelling insurance after total loss people would take out insurance one day, crash the car the next, claim and then cancel and get a refund. thats not how insurance works. remember car insurance is an annual policy.

Why would cancelling insurance stop such a thing, simply not issuing a refund after a total loss (which they already do) would adequately prevent it.

I understand it's a 12 month policy. Thats my point, I've paid for 12 months, they can't just cancel if i don't buy a car within 14 days.

I understand once you have a total loss you are no longer entitled to a refund, and I don't expect one, but this means that I don't get a refund or insurance. How can they do that?

they are cancelling there is no insurance vehicle. Can you ask for more time?
can you not just insure any vehicle and then amend it when you buy a car? may incure amendment fees though.

Does car insurance pay out for you injuring yourself then?
Of course you could ask your pasengers to find you liable for their injuries.

    How can they do that?

They've already offered you the service you paid for.
Have you asked them where this is stated in the contract?
If it's not there you might have a leg to stand on.
If it's there are you didn't read it then you probably don't.
