Affect of new accounts on file

Good afternoon,
I am trying to repair my credit file, after I had a late payment in May (despite it only being a few days late), yesterday my score went up into the fair category - then, today it went back down. The reason being 'You have recently opened 1 or more new credit accounts'.
After looking at my file it is due to my phone supplier setting up a 'new' account for an upgrade I did, so no additional credit or real life affect
Does anybody know how long new accounts affect scores in a negative way?
