I think, and I'm probably wrong, that the story goes:
There once was a personalised widget.
This widget was lost.
Someone then found the widget.
Someone then sold the widget on ebay.
A relative of the person who lost the widget now wants it back.
The relative is also questioning the legality of someone finding the widget and then selling it.0 -
Does anyone know if there's any rules regarding selling items on without the original owners permission? All I've got out of ebay so far is "maybe". I didn't even know you could be transferred via Live Help!
What rules could there be?
If, as you suggest, the original owner 'lost' the item some time ago, how would you suggest that the seller gain their permission?0 -
We'll I'm sure you're allowed to get rid of lost items after you've exhausted reasonable channels for finding the rightful owner, as well as waiting a reasonable time (6 months...). It's almost certainly not the one you lost anyway.0

The second hand market would grind to a halt if the original owner's permission had to be obtained every time an object was soldEarly retired - 18th December 2014

How is the seller on eBay, the 'current' owner at the time of sale, supposed to know that a previous owner 'lost' it, as opposed to sold it, passed it on as a gift, or had it fall to a relative or other through inheritance?0 -
With somebody's name on the back, my guess was that it's a medal won by somebody who is now dead and their son/daughter will receive it as a surprise birthday/similar gift if they can find out where it is now and buy it.0

I don't know. I was thinking more that the current seller found it on the street 6 months ago and is now fed up of it lying around ? Who knows.....0
