5.1 on my PS2

Options
I am trying to get my PS2's audio in 5.1 but only have a non optical surround system.

I was wondering if it is possible to buy a cheap soundcard for my PC which has an optical i/p, can process the PS2's signal and o/p it electrically (preferably analog - 3 or 6 cables)

I am barking up the wrong tree here? (Or should it be Am I??)

Cheers

You should consider an A/V amp with optical inputs etc. I bought mine from Richer Sounds and have never looked back. My motherboard on my PC has SPDIF out so I can play PC games /DVDs in 5.1 surround sound.

    Thanks Joe.

Question was really down to the fact that I have bought another surround system already - it was 25 quid and got me 'free' delivery from Big P.

I also plan to put the PC through this.

The two SS systems I have in the same room come to around 90 quid but neither have an optical i/p

I already have a Sony 550 down stairs which coincidentally enough I bought from Richer sounds as well.

Looks like I'll be rethinking this room.....

What you need for the PS2 is a converter unit that that can turn light into a voltage. These may be as expensive as the entire unmentioned surround sound system. Perhaps there is a mod known amongst the PS2 community since the signal was a voltage before it was light.
    I did find this:-

With fibre optic cables it is more expensive than your surround amp even if it was in stock.

Yeah seen this as well, but unfortunately, this still gives a digital o/p and the amp I have won't decode it - that's why I was thinking about the PC.

You'd be suprised about the optical cables!! I bought a good one that came with an S vid attached for 4 quid from ebay.

Cheers anyway, I'll just have to do a wee bit more surfing.....
