Yes bankruptcy would appear on your credit file for 6years.

At the moment any one of your creditors might commence court action against you for up to the next 5years - so you could potentially have a CCJ on your file still in 11years time.

Perhaps speak to the charity again or speak to a different debt advice charity.

IMPORTANT - Where to seek professional impartial advice about your debts.

If you talk through your finances in detail they would talk through the implications of bankruptcy, what sort of budget you would need to live to, whether you might have an IPA to pay etc.

    Hello there,

I just wanted to echo Tixy's excellent advice. I'm not sure which debt charity you have contacted - I hope it wasn't National Debtline! Regardless of anyone's circumstances it would be important they are provided with impartial, holistic advice. Some organisations masquerade as 'charities' but may not actually be one, they often will try and sell a product or service which could make them money. As the money you have spare is likely to be too little for these options it could be that the organisation you called were not overly interested in helping.

Given your circumstances I think trying another charity could be worth doing. We work very closely with both Stepchange and the Citizens Advice Bureau; I would recommend contacting either of those or indeed ourselves!

    Best wishes,
