Hi,
I have been trying to find out about banks that allow you to store jewellery. I have asked around and not found much information.
What other alternatives are there to storing jewellery in banks?
Thanks

A lot of banks have stopped hiring safety deposit boxes but I think Metrobank is one that is doing them. There are also specialist safety deposit companies which a quick internet search will bring up. Check them out though to make sure they are genuine. You could also buy a safe for your own property, your insurance company would tell you what the specification should be but of course it is likely to raise your insurance premiums.0 -
We bought a safe. Ours in a screwfix one similar to the ones you find in hotels (about £20) but we've bolted it to the house.
It probably doesn't fit insurance company specifications, but for our own purposes it means we're protected from the majority of opportunist bulglaries, also thieving relatives/cleaner and also I'd hope it would clear us of negligence if we did have an insurance claim as it goes byond what is expected from householders.
If someone held a gun to my head in an armed robbery then of course it wouldn't make any difference.
Bear in mind that if you get a discount from your insurer for using a safe then you must use it. This can make it not worthwhile in case you forget now and again.
I have a thieving nephew unfortunately and there have been very difficult family moments where he has stolen from family.
Obviously there's another isssue to solve, but it can stop really bad feuds occuring if something goes missing and there is doubt and of course some items may have high sentimental value.0 -
A colleague is marrying into a family with a Family Rock - which will become her responsibility on matrimony (like her husband isn't enough?!), so watching for answers with interest!
My suggestion she bury it was met with an understandable squalk...0 -
Why would you want to "store" a wedding ring.
Surely you wear it every day.
I would be worried about more than my ring if a criminal was next to my bedside table, but the main thing is to get it insured, then providing you're not negligent you'll be covered, but very little should happen to an item you're wearing everyday and is usually pretty indestructable.0 -
OP hasn't said it was a ring, just seeking jewellery storage.
Family Rock not on a ring either AFAIK.0 -

A quick search shows that there is at least one company providing safety deposit boxes in Manchester established in 1912 and open 7 days a week.
Also some of the State Bank of India branches have safety deposit boxes but I don't know if that includes the Manchester branch.0 -

Ah right thanks.
FWIW I think a safe at home is good enough for most people (with household insurance as well of course).
If it's hidden it will foil the majority of ordinary opportunist burglaries where it's only easy pickings.
If someone turns up armed then no amount of security will help if they stick a gun to your head (even bank have armed robberies), but that's pretty unlikely if you aren't in the public eye.
I have a hiscox home insurance policy. They come highly recommended.
Our valuables are insured anywhere in the world (single item limit £15K)
This is very different from most ordinary household policies which have a low single limit (about £1500) and a very low limit for personal possessions outside the home.
This £15K limit means we don't have to list items which comes with some obligation to keep the values up to date.0 -

Of course, you need to trust the agent, if you outsource storage of valuables.
Some jewellers will store jewellery. They tend to have sufficient security and insurance.
There are non-bank secure-storage providers.
Then there's secure home storage -- safes, access-control mechanisms. Thnk about whether you want protection from fire as well as theft (fire can be a larger risk in homes than theft is).
Don't bother to hide jewellery in a bedroom. Thieves know that people hide their jewels in their pants.
