Tigra oxygen sensor problem - HELP!

Hiya,

Am wondering if anybody can give me any advice. My 06 reg Vauxhall Tigra, which ive only owned since June and the AA checked thoroughly before i purchased, has displayed the engine emmisions dashboard light.
I took it to my local garage and my car would not communicate with their fault diagnostic equipment (4 different machines tried!). They could not tell me what the problem was and advised that taking it to Vauxhall was probably the only way to determine...
Ive done that today and its come back that i need a new oxygen sensor and they are quoting me £323.80 (including the initial diagnosis). does this seem like a lot? i really have no idea.
im hoping once they give me the exact details re which oxgyen sensor it is i can try and get quotes from my original local garage and knock it down a bit but now Vauxhall are saying they dont want to give me the details now because they are going to do some more checks overnight because they suspect (but cant be sure) that my ECU is faulty as well? and im under the impression these are £800+ to replace!!!

any advice would be soooo appreciated. i am seriously panicking and sitting at work wanting to cry. i do NOT have this amount of money spare with Xmas coming up & a debt management plan to pay off :(:(:(

If you're paying for the vauxhall diagnostic then they have to tell you what fault code they found. Sounds like they're giving you the runaround. If I were you I'd seek out recommendations for another independant garage or Vauxhall specialist. Like you say, once you know what the code is, you'll know which o2 sensor it's referring to. Of course, it might not be the o2 sensor that's at fault, just the reading on it, so could be the cat or a hole in the exhaust.

Your best bet for internet advice is to look for a vauxhall/tigra forum owners club. Good luck.

As above says the dealership should let you know what the code is then take that back to your original garage if you trust them

That age of Tigra according to the google has one of the Z**XE family of engines which is the same as the Corsa C which means that the Good old pedal test will work. If all else fails.

A new oxygen sensor shouldn't be more than hours labour and around £70-100 for the sensor. Plug your car reg into euro car parts look for Lambda sensor will give you a ball park figure.
  • Thank you both for the help, much appreciated.

Yes i will be getting the code from Vauxhall at some point, yesterday they just said they didnt want to give me the details YET until they have investigated further to see if there was a problem with my ECU also but i dont really see how the two can be related? i was under the impression that if my ECU was broken the car wouldnt even switch on?
  • don't sound to me an ECU fault.

tell VX stop mucking round and give your print out you've paid for.

they have just got extra labor out of you because they kept the car over night for more diagnosis.

I'd be inclined to ask for that further diagnosis test sheet aswell and look on it for time commenced and time finished if they can produce one, if they cant I'd be arguing that im not paying for further tests because you cant prove you tested it and how long for for all I know you just put in the back car park and did nothing.
  • thanks for your help everybody. no i didnt pay any extra labour charge for them keeping my car overnight, i had already agreed a standard £49.99 charge for the diagnostic scanning no matter how long that took. i asked whether it would cost anymore for these "extra" checks.

lambda sensor has been replaced my other garage and seems to have fixed the problem thank god.
