Estate agent's request...why?

We are in the process of buying. Offer accepted, our mortgage offer is in place, and we are not selling our current home.
Anyhow the estate agent that we are buying through rang today, I didn't take the call, asking for a copy of our passports and a utility bill.
Why would they want that?
Always a bit funny about giving stuff out like that. My solicitor already has all those details and understandably has copy's of those items for money laundering issues, ID etc.

But why does our vendors estate agent want/need these details?

Thanks in anticipation!

  • Its to do with identity theft. I wouldn't worry, we have had ours checked and photocopied. I think its a recent check in the last few years.

The estate agent needs them for the same reason as your solicitor; to help prevent money laundering.
