i know this is probably a duplicate post but i'm not sure what it's called so probably not searching right, please just point me to the right thread if it is.

Right the thing is, i'm about to have all my rear guttering changed and as part of that i want to incorporate a water but thing, that roof rainwater goes into, nothing huge, so will need to overflow back into the normal drainage system, i want to do it as cheap as possible.
i don't need any power to the water etc, just a tap or space to dunk my watering can in to retreive the water.

where do i start? any recommendations?

  • Recycled Water container (try small garden centres or freeads) or from council / water board special offers = £15 for 200 litre tank.
    Rain diverter from B & Q = £5.99

    Thats all you need.
The rain diverter will need occasional cleaner out - once or twice a year.

huge thanks, much cheaper than i expected and never even considered asking the council (though ours are rubbish!)

these look like they'd take the water to the but,
but what stops it overflowing? how do i get it back into the downpipe/waste system?

is there anything to stop me putting a diverter thingy on a wheelybin (or similar) and making my own? i'm happy to dunk my watering can so not overly bothered about a tap....anyone tried this?
    does it work?

I have seen wheelie bins for sale with taps as mobile water butts. Cant say i would like to move one when it was full of water though, it would be heavy and slop around all over the place.

No reason why you cant make up your own if you have a spare bin.

We have made our own water butt out of a disused chemical drum, cleaned it out thoroughly then drilled a hole in the bottom and fitted a tap, then got a diverter kit and away we go! All for less the £10!

I have seen water butts fitted together so that when the water butt fills up it drains into another, what do I need to connect the 2 together (have one water butt already but all of water goes in this as the downpipe does not lead into a drain so over flowing at the moment because of the rain)
    thanks

I have two butts set up in this way. The cheapest place i found for a connection pack was my local wickes store. It was about £2 and consists of a piece of flexible plastic pipe, some rubber sealing washers and nuts.

I made a water butt out of a wheely bin with a Sankey tap from B&Q (around £4 I think). I haven't yet connected it to a drain pipe, just fill it with waste water, for example from the fish tank and leave the top open when it rains.

Word of warning though - mine is nearly full and I noticed it has started to warp and bulge at the bottom, they're probably not designed to store that much weight! So if you do make a butt out of a wheely bin it's probably best to connect it to the guttering at least a foot or so from the top of the bin, so as not to add too much weight in water to it and cause it to split.

I wouldn't keep fish water myself, full of crap!! Or any waste water. Lawn or compost heap straight away.
