WiFi with Access Points - centralised admin

Options
I wish to deploy a WiFi network using a core ADSL router and 3 Access points distributed for signal coverage etc.....

I also need to impose WPA security and MAC filtering....

my hope is that I can configure these things on the core router, and that the configuration will cascade down to the 3 Access Points for screening of clients that try to connect....

I hope to do this using cheap products such as NetGear and Linksys - I assume this works as described above?

not sure of exact range but its a small office solution in central london.... we have done a full site survey and 3 WAPs are required....

.... i am just interested in technical feasibility.

thats irrelevent to the question i asked.

2mb for what its worth... dont get started on capacity and throughput, i know the limitations.
  • I would recommend the Pre N system as you have faster then wired. The wireless access point will have to be connected to the switch that is connected to the server and the dsl modem. But the best option for an office setup is to have it as follows-

DSL modem connected to the server, this is then connected to the wireless access points via Cat5e cable a maxium of 100m then you can look into boosters to boost the signal to the wireless access points, if you need the access point further away.

Just to add I was just asking because then you will have to think about who will get the Internet access over someone else. You didnt have to be cheeky.

what server? - who mentioned a server?

what i asked is about using Access Points in conjunction with a standard ADSL router, and allow the MAC controls and WPA security to be cascaded down, in addition to DHCP.

50+ users! It was hardly an unfair assumption.

  • After 10 maybe 20 people/computers connected to a network it would be better to have a server, there are many benifits to running a server for an office. Some include:-
    Backup
    better management
    secruity is improved, etc

Exactly, trying to run 50+ pcs without a server sounds like asking for a headache, especially with what sounds like attempting essentially a domestic wireless internet setup.

If you want strangers to help you, it is not a good idea to jump down their throats when they try.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
