Hi guys! :hello:

Our Ford KA 2002 has problems getting into gear while the engines on. while on its really really tough to push it into gear. Someone has recommended its a clutch problem and may need changing (its done 76,000 miles).

I was just wondering if someone can recommend a cheap place around the Northolt, Ealing, Hillingdon area? North west London. I've been quoted over £350-£380 by one independent garage and £252 by Mr clutch.

Anyone had any dealing with Mr clutch generally? I've heard horror stories. I'm planning to go to the one in hayes. So frustrating as only bought the car 2 weeks ago privately :(

Many thanks!

Make sure they do the entire clutch.

And use a decent mske of clutch such as Sachs or LuK

And the KA has a concentric slave cylinder which you should do when you are in there. £41 from EuroCarParts at the moment but they also have discount codes published regularly.

    http://www.eurocarparts.com/mobile/ecp/c/Ford_Ka_1.3_2002/p/car-parts/car-transmission/clutch-and-associated-parts/hydraulic-clutches/?645590020&1&21473d49ae86fc54b9f6187eda31438d82ec4a8f&000079

KA is a doddle to work on.

I would use your local mechanic and get the parts from Euro

Actually entire kit including slave is only £119 (LuK)

They had an additional 25% off earlier in the month

Look on their website for the codes.

Order online for collection or delivery next day.

I would susoect Mr Clutch will be fitting a cheaper clutch than LuK and only doing the CSC if it is noisy

And always ask for the old parts back, yes i did work in the trade many moons ago.

May just need bleeding (if hydraulic) or adjusting (if cable).

Well, I used them years ago for my old Mondeo, and was most impressed.
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

I would get it looked at first - as others have mentioned, the clutch may need adjusting or the hydraulic system bleeding. If it's difficult to change gears, it could be the clutch isn't disengaging properly because of this type of issue.

I believe this is a hydraulic system but having never stripped one apart I can't confirm

the normal failure mode for clutches is either total failure or variations on slipping.

If it's not slipping but just hard to get into gear then I'd be looking towards linkage/cable/cylinder issues which will almost certainly be cheaper than changing a clutch.

I'd take it to a little garage and get them to diagnose the problem

When the friction plate gets so worn it can start to drag causing the OPs issues.

I have always found that really low powered cars tend not to have much in the way of clutch slip due to this

Powerful cars can have clutch slip at an early stage due to extra power, but it can be driven round for many thousands of miles aswell, but will also begin to have selection issues like the OP as slippage gets easier and easier to invoke

Hi MSE's! :CLLC: thank you for your great responses. Here's an update:

The problem seemed not to be present yesterday to my surprise after driving for a good mile or so... nothing!!! I thought when clutch goes than thats it! when a friend come to look so quite possibly this means it could just need adjusting as intermittent problem? The clutch pedal does feel funny like the end of its adjustment any insight into this? I will get it to a garage to have a butchers! but what do you guys think now? :)

Also can anyone recommend a cheap breakdown and recovery? After this event think we should definitely get some!! :D

Many thanks! You guys are GREAT!!!!! :D

  • I wonder if this is a cold weather issue and the oil as gone hydroscopic.

Why not change the oil for the better quality oils yours maybe original ford spec and this could be your problem as when it's cold it's stiff, warmer weather it's easier.?
