Winter tyres... worth the price?

  • That BM has a crumpled back end, and was just part of the Daily Mail's 'it's snowing it's snowing' report. It looks more like it got hit from behind and shunted off the road, unless it managed to bounce off its rear end.

or quite simply span on the ice, hit the wall rear end first, turned more than rolled onto it's roof

This Autoexpress video has a good comparison of winter tyres vs summer in typical UK winter conditions.

Starts about 3 minutes in on a cold wet road, which is much more common in a UK winter than snow.

I wish more winter tyre tests were conducted on a range of road conditions found on UK roads in Winter, all too often the tests are conducted on Ice in subzero tempretures which are rarely encountered in the UK.

Jeez, OP, is there any need for ANOTHER winter tyre thread? Google it and you'll find countless threads asking the same question. And every thread goes the same way. Arguments in favour of none/2 tyres/4 tyres. Clips on Youtube backing up theory. Random rants. Scaremongering. Yadda yadda yadda.

And there is always a post saying " For crying out loud, do we really need another thread on winter tyres".

I noticed that the other day. All the tests were in fields with deep snow rather than a road we'd actually encounter.

I watched one the other day that was at a test track in the wet.

Yeah it's nice to keep this yawnfest alive.

Agree that 2 winters is a bad idea (except possibly as the rears on a RWD) because they'd make the car appallingly tail-happy, but you WOULD still be insured.

Inappropriate tyres are firmly in the realm of "condition of the vehicle", which the RTA specifically prohibits insurers from denying cover for. You'd probably be reduced to 3rd party only, and they may well come after you for reimbursement if the tyre combination contributed to an accident, but you WOULD still be insured in law.

It was Hughe's insurance that told me they wouldn't provide cover unless there was a full set of 4 winter tyres. And they wanted to know who fitted them, so that was done 'properly' in their opinion.

All ADAC winter tyre tests include 4 scenarios: dry, wet, snow and ice.
