3 days in Edinburgh .. what to do/how much spending money

Hi,

I'm thinking of booking a trip to Edinburgh and was wandering what are some of the things that are a must see/do ?

Will be for 3 days and will be me and my gf both in our twenties.

Also how much spending money do you think we'd need?

Thanks

Depends on what you like really! I've been a few times and never been bored.

There is the Camera Obscura, it rained heavily one day when I was there and this place kept me entertained for a good few hours!

There is Edinurgh Castle that you can visit, the Royal Yacht Britannia is not far away, The Scottish Parliament could be worth a visit if you like that sort of thing.

A walk down the royal mile could take a while, there are plenty of little shops, museums and other attractions.

The shopping is brill on Princes Street and the surrounding area.

One of the ghost tours at night is a must (in my book at least!), very interesting and a bit scary.

I'm sure people will be along with more ideas but that should get you started.

It isn't a cheap place though so you can't really do it on a budget but its well worth it in my opinion!

  • Hi

I spend a few days there with my 6 year old son last year so I can only tell you what I would have done had he not been with me :)

You can't really go to Edinburgh and not visit the castle. This will take half a day. It's quite central so you can combine this with a wander up and down the Royal Mile, or shopping in the town centre.

I found the local buses really efficient & cheap and bought a day pass that took us out to the Royal Yacht Britannia, out past the Scottish Parliament to Arthurs Seat which we climbed up.

Then, I would have liked to try the many bars & restaurants - and I suggest that you go and sample that as it looked really good to me. I second the previous post about the ghost tours - would have loved to do that. You can book them near the train station.

Edinburgh centre is quite compact and quite easy to get around.
  • Go see the pandas at Edinburgh Zoo. It's one of the best zoo's in the country in my opinion and very easy to get to on the bus from the centre.

Spooky tour of the underground vaults, we did one like this with Mercat Tours http://www.mercattours.com/ghostly-underground.asp

Mary Kings Close on the Royal Mile is well worth a visit http://www.realmarykingsclose.com/ It's the old streets under the ground now, quite unique.

Edinburgh Castle as others have mentioned.

National museum of Scotland is excellent. It had a big makeover a couple of years back and is worth a couple of hours, especially if raining and don't forget to go up to the roof top terrace for some great views. http://www.nms.ac.uk/our_museums/national_museum.aspx

Walk up Carlton Hill for some more good views.

Depending on when you are going, a boat trip from Queensferry is good. We did one to Inchcolm Island. If it's winter i wouldn't bother though as it will be freezing! In fact, they probably don't even do the trips in the winter thinking about it...

Take the train over the Forth Bridge to North Queensferry and visit Deep Sea World if you like aquariums http://www.deepseaworld.com/planning-your-trip

It can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be. Some good restaurants but then also some great little take aways such as the baked potato shop just off the Mile. More potato for your money than you will be able to eat! Jimmy Cheungs at the top of the station do a good chinese buffet.

The Christmas market opens in a couple of days and is good for a nice warming mulled wine and some german stollen cake. Its on until early Jan.

Why not treat your other half to afternoon tea at the Balmoral Hotel or the Caledonian?

Love Edinburgh, one of my favourite places.
