xwheel load failed and hook load failed

hi there when my friends laptop boots up into windows xp, pop up appears saying load dll xwheel load failed, then after that another pop up says load dll hook load failed, and the computer just freezers.
What may have caused this and is there a solution apart from formatting , many thanks
