I'm not sure what car which possibly not helpful!
I do know this -
I do about 14,000 miles per year. I have always thought that diesel is my best option...
I really like the Peugeot/Citroen diesel engines as they've always been really economic but I think that things have moved on a fair bit now.
I would ideally like something that has a combined cycle of 70 mpg or more.
I also like things like bluetooth phone and usb capability, a/c etc...
I like a medium family car.
My budget is about £12,000.
Any tips or suggestions would be very welcome!
I was in a similar position back in August and was looking for a car new or less than a year old, approx £12,000 in price. I "shortlisted" to the Ford Focus Zetec, Peugeot 308 1.6HDI and VW Golf 1.6 TDI.
Of the three the 308 can be got the cheapest. Well under £10K from memory, however i have been motor trading for a number of years and i have seen various problems with the 1.6HDI engine, and rightly or wrongly that has put me off the current model.
The Focus, i didnt like the styling of - the wheelbase to me looks too long and it just didnt "do it" for me. In fairness though, its probably, along with the Golf "best in class". Other advantage is that its the current model, whereas the 308 is just about to be replaced, and any golfs on budget will be mk6's not mk7s.
So i went for VW Golf. Dynamically excellent, though not too many toys.
Any amount of late 2012 1.6 TDI S models about the country with metallic paint. I bought mine with 13K miles from a main VW dealer for £12,400 back in august. Has never yet dropped below 60mpg when worked out brim to brim, averaging around 64mpg and a 'best of' 68.9. Trip computer would be reading maybe 3 mpg up on that. £30 per year road tax too.
I bought alloys for mine off gumtree for £200.
Have done 6000 miles in mine and well pleased.
I ruled out the Hyundai i30 and Kia as again, i just wasnt impressed by them and TBH they're dynamically average. Also i do big miles and i'm not sure how residuals would look on a v high miles car, whereas you can still get a reasonably return on a high miles Golf or Focus. Probably not so much on a 308 but they are cheap as chips to buy anyway, so overall depreciation will be similar from here on in.0
