Buying a new rim

Any recommendations on where I could buy a new rim/matching alloy for my car, online? Preferably with the option of adding a tyre at the same time.

My new car hasn't got a spare wheel, just one of those repair kits and I don't feel comfortable driving without a spare. There's been plenty a time where my spare has saved me so I'm not going to do without one now.

    Have you considered a spacesaver?

Have you actually got a wheel-well to put the wheel in?

What car is this and what tyre size?

There are forums for nearly all makes and they all have a for sale section.

Firstly, make sure there is room for a full size spare wheel. You will also need something to secure the spare in the boot.

mytyres.co.uk offer steel wheel and tyre packages - they take about 4-5 days (from Germany), the tyre comes fitted and balanced. Probably best to match the tyre brand/model/specs to your existing.

There's a spare wheel well in the boot but I'm not completely sure if it's for a space saver or a full sized. I'll need to check.

It's a Freelander 2 TD4. I think it's an 18 inch but would need to clarify in the morning.

Certainly don't be wasting your money on a an alloy a steel rim will be fine.
  • Search eBay for 'freelander breaking' and set preferences as nearest first. Probably find a spare alloy for a handful of dollars.

I got a steel wheel from http://www.oponeo.co.uk and added a part worn tyre to use as a spare on our new Megane.

Also, even if your regular wheels are 18" it doesn't mean the spare needs to be that size. You just get a tyre with a larger sidewall (there are tyre size calculators on the internet to help work this out).

I tried to sell a set of freelander alloys on ebay a couple of weeks ago, no takers so they went in the scrap, £11 each for 16inch.

use a light space save wheel in the car, and buy a spare alloy and keep in the shed if you want to be able to drive home and swap over.

The only reason why I would buy a spare alloy is if the alloy in question was discontinued or rare and I really wanted one to cover my back. Classic car owners would do this.

A steel wheel will be smaller (say 14" rather than 17") which might appear like the alloy has more space. But the smaller rim sizes tend to have narrower tyres.

The narrowest tyre you can buy for a 17 inch is 195 (but conventionally you'd drive at least 205), for a 14 inch you can get 175 (maybe even narrower). So a full size alloy with full width tyres may be too wide to fit in the wheel well.
