Restaurant booking deposit

Hi, any advise please?
I booked a restaurant table for a Xmas party, paying a £40 deposit. For various reasons I have to cancel, but the restaurant is saying they don't refund deposits. I wasn't told this at the time of booking, and I'm giving them 4 weeks notice, so it's not like they've bought food or anything. Any advice much appreciated.
