To switch to SSE or not?

Im currently an EDF customer on a economy 10 tariff (standard variable). I'm trying to work out if it will be cheaper to switch to SSE

EDF charges

Peak Rate: 19.45p
Off Peak: 6.43p
Standing Charge: 18p

SSE charges

Peak rate: 19.23p
Off peak: 10.42p
Standing charge: 14.8p

EDF have estimated I'll use 6189 peak units and 4520 off peak units in the next year. I know that seems high but I use a wheelchair and am at home most of the time. It's important that I keep warm.

If someone could help me work out if its worth switching I'd be really grateful. I'm feeling rather overwhelmed by it all and am worried that money isn't going as far as it once did.

Thanks in advance

Are there no discounts to be deducted, is VAT included, do they not offer anything cheaper than the standard variable ? Using those estimated figures EDF works out at £1560.10 pa (£130.01 pm) and SSE £1715.15 pa (£142.93 pm).
  • They both include discounts for direct debit and paperless billing. With both I am also entitled to a Warmhome rebate of £120 a year
  • Use your past bills so that you know how much you typically use per year. There is often a bill which shows the usage per year. Don't use company estimates, use what you really use to work it out. Even if it's not quite a year, missing some days, you should be able to work out a very close estimate proving the missing days are not during really cold weather. For close to a year energy figures and to get a close estimate for a yearly figure, divide the energy usage you have by the number of days and multiply by 365 to get a yearly figure.

Then put your numbers into a price comparison to find out which is cheapest. It might be worth looking for old bills for very cold winters to find a worst case scenario.

The comparison sites will not give a cost for THTC but will give the cost of standard or E7 which may need some wiring changes in the house.
  • I've since had an updated quote from SSE. They know say that their rates are:

    Standing charge: 14.09p
    Peak rate: 18.31p
    Off peak rate: 9.92p

Based on me using 6189 peak units and 4520 off peak units in the next year, could somebody please be kind enough to help me work out if its worth switching? These prices include a direct debit and paperless discount, but doesn't include VAT

That new set of figures is excluding VAT, the first set is the same including VAT @ 5%.
