Credit file reasons for refusal of mobile contract

Hi all, not sure if this should go here or the mobile forum.
I am 46 and have Never had a credit problem in my life. I own my own home outright (no mortgage), am solvent, have had a credit card for 28 years with a current £12000 limit on which I currently have an £8000 balance. I Have several bank accounts all in credit, and have recently repaid a £15000 personal loan. I have had contract mobile phones for at least the last 20 years and currently am 6 months into a 24 month contract with vodafone.
My wife likewise has no issues as I deal with all the finances. There are just the two of us at home (no kids), my wife is disabled, does not work, and I am her full time carer.
My wife has a mobile contract with vodafone (£15 per month), which has just come to its end and as she doesn't use it often and the upgrades offered weren't very good so I had a look round for a better deal.
We have recently moved from BT to TalkTalk and I discovered that as a customer I could get a good mobile deal through them which would give a new phone and only cost £7.50 per month for the same minutes as she has with vodafone including free calls home to the TalkTalk landline and half price (£3.75) for the first 6 months.
As I had taken out the TalkTalk contract, I had to apply for the mobile for her in my name which involved a credit check with Equifax. I recieved an email the following day to say that the order had been cancelled as I failed the credit check!!!!!!!! I can't believe it, and can't understand what the problem is (they won't say) especially as I have just moved to them as a new customer and they were quite happy to send me several hundred pounds worth of set top box and router etc on the basis that they trust me to pay the £35 per month rental.
I understand I can look at my credit file for free by signing up for a free 30 day trial and cancelling before it expires, but before I go down that route I just wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience or can shed any light on what the problem may be.
Sorry for the long post, and thanks.

Do you use Quidco? If you go to the carphone warehouse page and read the reviews you will see a lot of people in the same position as you. Some of them don't believe a search was ever done.
I've had some cracking deals from them and their associated companies and never had any problems, but you are not alone in what you are reporting.0 -
You can check your call credit file for free with noddle. Least used, but all my stuff is on there.
Sounds like it's not going to be an issue though, very odd.:beer:0 -
I have recently done the same through TalkTalk - I believe this maybe an automated response and that an application through them after 6 months of being their customer for their phone/broadband/tv services gets you accepted.0

Well, I signed up to 'noddle' (free credit reports), and surprise, surprise my credit report is fine - even showing that my vodafone account (which talktalk piggyback) is fine, with every payment made on time and no arrears............
Starting to definately smell a rat!
