When I took my car in I'd forgot to top it up with screen wash.

They filled it up and left the little bottle - but only charged me 80p.

I love my garage - great work, always cheap and they even service my car on a Saturday when they wouldn't normally open.

When was it ever an offence?

I know that you can have an MOT fail for empty washer bottle (been there done that) because it fails due to inoperative washers.
    Oh yes, its an offence.

Reg 34 MV (Con and Use) Regs, 1986

Motor vehicles to be fitted with wipers and washers ( certain exemptions - not cars).

34(6) Every wiper/washer fitted shall at all times while a vehicle is being used on a road be maintained in efficient working order and properly adjusted.

    £1,000 fine - no points.

An empty bottle will offend 34(6)

BUT if they quote you say ....£150 all in for a service then they are not going to knock off £2.25 for non use of the screenwash.

Toyota did - the all-in quoted price was £129, however because I told them that the screenwash top-up was not required, I paid £126.73
Now free from the incompetence of vodafail

Might just be me but empty screenwash is still an offence isn't it?

If a garage let a car go out the door with empty screenwash and somebody got in trouble for it, yes unlikely, would we than have another thread on how the dealer stiched them and and should have topped it up.

There is MSE and just being a pedant, no offence intended.

I did say i brimmed it before it went in
Nothing to see here, move along.
  • well they gave you a bottle of it, and didnt just bill you for it so what is the matter? you'll need it sooner or later
I've got 5L of the stuff in the shed that probably cost about the same as their sad little bottle

My dealer once put a new unopened 1L bottle of top up oil in the boot. I thought, that's a nice gesture until I saw the price he charged me for it and told him to forget it in future!!
